The temple was originally built as an Adinatha shrine during the Chandela period. The temple has some Vaishnavaite features on its exterior. The entrance has an inscription with a magic square. It is part of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site associated with the Chandela dynasty.
